Lewmar Anchor Rope
Lewmar's 3-Strand Rope is an economicalchoice for your windlass rode.Keep in mind, the windlass does not stow therode in the anchor locker - gravitydoes. So make sure you have ample depth andvolume in your anchor locker toaccommodate the length of rode you havechosen. 3-Strand is typically 20-30% less expensivethan premium plaited anchor line. 3-Strand line, when used in salt water, willstiffen over time. It can besoaked in a bucket of fresh water and fabricsoftener overnight (the longer thebetter) to bring back a more flexiblecondition. If this does not yieldacceptable results, it should be replaced. |
| Lewmar USA Premium 8-Plaited Nylon AnchorRope - 8-Plaited nylon rope eliminates some ofthe service problems associatedwith the 3-strand ropes. 8-Plait uses8-individual braided strands woventogether that allow the rope to be relaxed. But, when under load, ittightens up to a firm lay. The higher the loadthe harder the lay becomes.
- 8-Plait carries the same tensile strengthas 3-Strand.
- 8-Plait does not coil or create a "birdsnest" in the locker like3-Strand will. 8-Plait flakes and falls uponitself.
- 8-Plait will not twist and knot up.
- 8-Plait will not loop over onto itself.
- 8-Plait has less stretch so it will not buryitself deep into thegypsy's grip when overloaded, which means lessdamage to the stripper whenthe windlass is abused or overloaded.
- 8-Plait pays off of the windlass into thelocker much like chain, allowing for better use of smaller lockerdesigns.
- 8-Plait is 80% less prone to becomingstiff when used in salt water than3-Strand.
- 8-Plait nylon rope is 1/3 more absorbentthan 3-Strand rope. Moreabsorbent means more weight; more weightmeans better fall into the anchorlocker.
- 8-Plait should be soaked in water (saltor fresh - it does not matter)to pre-lubricate the rope so it can be used inthe windlass initially. Whenrope is used dry and new, we have seen eitherslippage or sticking in therope pocket of the gypsy. Once the rope iswet and used, it out performs the3-Strand. The longer it is used the betterit gets.
